What is Focal Therapy?
Focal therapy is an innovative and revolutionary treatment modality for the management of localized prostate cancer and small kidney tumors. It is provided at Metropolitan General by Dr. Mertziotis and is already implemented in reputable centers across the USA and Europe, delivering excellent results.
Focal therapy is an advanced minimally invasive technique that uses a diode laser to ablate (destroy) small localized tumors within the kidney and prostate.
Application & Advantages
This technique is based on the innovative Fusion method, which combines multiparametric MRI of the prostate with transrectal ultrasound or computed tomography for the kidney. Initially, images of the prostate or kidney and the suspicious site (tumor) are obtained using MRI or CT scans. Then, a sensor guides us in three dimensions to the suspicious site for a biopsy.
Once the lesion is confirmed by histological examination to be cancerous, it is destroyed with extreme precision using a needle that carries the fiber of the diode laser through the skin, without necessitating an incision. This approach preserves the healthy cells and tissues of the prostate and kidney.
As a result, the usual complications associated with prostate cancer surgery (such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction) or kidney surgery (including heavy bleeding and prolonged anesthesia) are minimized, as the procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Typically, the patient can leave the clinic after just a few hours.
